I am seeking a second term as a School Trustee for the School District # 57 Board of Education.

I am running for Trustee because I have a passion for youth and education combined with an interest in public service and community involvement. I firstly want to thank the voters as I was humbled and honoured to be elected in 2011. At that time, I promised to be accountable and to conduct my duties with integrity and hard work to help improve education, for all students, in our District. It was a steep learning curve but I have delivered on those promises and am looking for support to serve a second term as I contribute to the success of your children and mine in our education system.

I truly believe Nelson Mandela’s quote that “education is the most powerful tool with which to change the world” and I want to do what I can to change the world through our SD57 students.

Children need strong advocates who will vocally demand the resources they need, create education programs that challenge and stimulate them and ensure they have safe, nurturing learning environments. I believe I have proven my ability to be a strong education advocate and would like to continue serving in this governance capacity.

There is still hard work to be done as our District continues to face budget challenges due to the underfunding fallout from the Government’s Net Zero and Cooperative Gains mandates. My Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is an asset I bring to the Board table. I also work hard to bring the viewpoints of all education stakeholders to the Board table by educating myself on the issues and an open-minded, common sense approach.

I have three main goals over my next Trustee term:

1) Using my financial skills as we grapple with budget challenges:

Unfortunately education delivery comes down to dollars, or the lack of them. The per student funding model does not provide adequate funding to maintain services when our enrollment are declining and 71% of our buildings are rated as poor. Trustees need to continue strong advocacy and lobbying for increased education funding. Also, as our District faces continued budget deficits, I will push for a collaborative, team process where education stakeholders work together to identify efficiencies to make the best use of our limited dollars.

2) Rebuilding relationships in Education.
The last three years were marked by prolonged labour disputes as educators fought hard for the funding their classrooms and students need. I was thankful that negotiated settlements were achieved but acknowledge that the pitched battle to get there has left scars to heal. A great public education system is a cornerstone of our BC society and is crucial to our future success. We need to address the lingering issues then move forward for our children.

3) I will continue to be strong voice in education transformation and for all our students. BC is on the cusp of transforming education through innovation and personalization. The education needs of today’s students are vastly different now than 20 years ago. Our current model of education delivery needs reinvigorating to keep students engaged and provide the skill set they need in this fast paced world. I want to help shape that education transformation to ensure we meet the needs of all BC students, whether urban, rural, aboriginal, vulnerable or special needs. I come from a rural background and bring first hand knowledge of the challenges facing students in our rural communities of McBride, Valemount, Mackenzie and Hixon.

An over-riding issue over this next term will be the Government’s review of School Board governance. Trustees will need to advocate strongly if they want to continue to be the locally elected, public voice in public education. We are a low-cost, check and balance in the education system. Our Board costs this District less than .001% of our operating budget but without that expenditure: we would not have the LQBTQ policy, the recent Mac decision or teacher pay for Sept 19th.

Overall, we simply must do better to provide adequate education to all our students and I want to be part of those team efforts because I truly care about making a difference.

Thank you for considering my candidacy for a second term as School Trustee for the School District # 57 Board of Education.
